I have owned and used several types of tripods all of which were top names and good if you had a lot of time to set them up, They were also heavy and far from compact. , I saw this one, listed here at Amazon with the pistol grip and and decided to purchase it. I have found it to be excellent. It extends smoothly and locks without problems. The best feature of this is the pistol grip itself. You can move your camera around instantly without having to lock or unlock it It moves up, down, side to side and around without effort, just tighten the center ring to hold your position. It also has a quick release which, if left attached to your camera enables you to set up and this tripod almost instantly. I would have rated this five stars if it were not for the weight (over 6lbs) which makes it heavy if you walking long distances with it, however, it folds up to just slightly over 24″ so it is not cumbersome when carrying it.

. Best of all for what you get, the price can’t be beat for such a well manufactured product. Amazon,as usual, gets it to you quickly, packed well. Accolades all around here.

I’ve worked with my Sunpak 6600PG digital tripod w/ pistol grip ball head for about four days now and can tell you without reservation, it is the greatest camera accessory you could own. Over the years I have tried at least 6 or 7 different makes and manufacturers of tripods (even a monopod), unhappy with them all. This Sunpak, however, makes using a tripod actually fun. I never thought I would say that, as I am strictly a hand-held photographer–except in very difficult situations where I may need a tripod. The quality of this product cannot be beat; the pistol grip is a dream. Never has it been so easy to set up a tripod, focus, and shoot. The previous reviewer was concerned about the weight (6 lbs); not really a problem for me; in fact, I prefer the weight for the added stability it gives. I shoot with a Nikon D300, a heavy camera, as you may know. When I add my Speedlight SB-800 to the mix, that’s a lot for a tripod to hold steadily. No problem with the 6600PG; in fact, I could add about 3 more pounds of weight and still not have a problem. And finally, the price cannot be beat; I really couldn’t believe the high quality for the extremely low price. Buy this tripod, and you’ll never have to buy another one again–unless of course you get hooked on tripod photography (which is actually happening to me) and decide you have to buy an even more expensive and fancier tripod.

When I looked at the tripod pictured, I thought I was ordering an aluminum-legged version of the Sunpak 423PX2 or 523PX2 because the photo looks identical to these Sunpak tripods with carbon fiber legs, including the neoprene foam sleeves on the upper leg sections. However, having received my 6600PG tripod today, which does NOT look like the photo, I know know that the unit pictured is a Sunpak 423PX2 or 523PX2. The description of the 6600PG (when I re-read it today) DOES state that this tripod has D-shaped aluminum legs — not the tubular legs of more expensive tripods, such as the 423PX2 or 523PX2, which sell for $139 and $199 respectively.

So it is not quite the screamin’ deal I thought I had made. However, it IS a VERY GOOD deal. It is still a reasonably well made, reasonably sturdy tripod for amateur/hobbyist use and it is still an unbeatable value. The best feature of this unit, by far, is the pistol grip ball head. If you have ever fiddled away a fleeting photo opportunity while trying to coax the three axis knobs of a standard tripod head into position — and who hasn’t — you will instantly appreciate the utter simplicity and ergonomic efficiency of this pistol grip ball head. Just squeeze the grip to move the camera into position to frame your image, release the grip and shoot. The grip produced by this ball & socket head is study enough to hold virtually any DSLR exactly where you place it — unless there is some hulking long, fast telephoto lens to weigh it down in front with a lot of leverage.

And, here’s the best part of the deal: the tripod itself is basically FREE. Why? Because Amazon sells this head alone — the Sunpak 620 Pistol Grip Ball Head — for $46.16. And it’s worth every penny! So, get the 6600PG tripod for considerably less than the price of its head alone, and if you later decide you want a better tripod to go under this terrific head, then you’re still money ahead.

When I bought my first tripod (a Best Buy cheapie) I remember thinking that I like what worked, but I didn’t like the complexity, and how I missed shots just trying to fiddle with all of the knobs, levers and buttons. Well, I really like this new Sunpak tripod. The pistol grip ball head is awesome. The unit is sturdy, not really heavy, and very well executed. I’m sure the carbon fiber model is a pound lighter, but till I lose 50 pounds, I cannot really justify spending more. The aluminum works just fine for me.

It doesn’t have the neoprene sleeves, but another reviewer also mentioned that so I was expecting it.

Good luck finding another pistol grip tripod at this price!
